About us:

Andrews Seed Company is a privately owned seed conditioning firm located in the Treasure Valley of Eastern Oregon, 50 miles NW of Boise, Idaho metro area.  Blessed with 160 days of frost free production in this semi arid location, an extensive reservoir irrigation system which feeds into the Snake River which bisects the valley, provides for extensive crop alternatives.  Major crops include onions, sugar beets, potatoes, and a multitude of vegetable and legume crops.  95% of the US production of sweet corn seed originates in this valley.  In this bountiful environment, Andrews Seed Company has established a modern conditioning and packaging firm to provide for both retail and wholesale consumers.  We invite you to view our updated list of seed products for your anticipated agricultural and home needs.

 

Alfalfa Seeds:

Western Favorites:                                                                                                                                   

VERNEMA - leafy, stem nematode resistant, suitable for all northern US production areas.  New production not available until Fall 2007.                                   

SURPASS - hi yielding, multi pest and disease resistant variety with good winterhardiness & test data.  Our best performer.                                    

PERRY - Nebraska developed, Ranger derivative, for consideration when drought stress important & alfalfa weevil of consideration.  New production not available until Fall 2007.                       

Treasure Valley blend - a 3 way blend of above varieties which promotes "plus's" in each                                     

RUSTLER - a fall dormancy 3/4 blend for maximum pest and disease resistance at best price

1S-1044 (NEW) - A fall dormancy 4 variety with excellent disease package, including 2 nematodes.                               

1S-1045 (NEW) - resistant to 10 major pests.  Dark green color with medium fine stems.                               

LAHONTAN - long lived, alkali resistant Western variety developed in Nevada, known for its fine hay quality.  limited inventory       

Hardy Varieties                                                                                                                                                                               

VERNAL - an old standby variety for fine quality hay in severe climates

1S-1035 (NEW) - high yielding, high quality, long standing, dark green alfalfa for 3 and 4 cut areas

WRANGLER - a long lived variety for tough climates.  Forage quality similar to Vernal                                                            

Drought Tolerant varieties:

NOMAD - a true rangeland alfalfa which will persist in 8" rainfall areas when establisehed.  Often planted with wheatgrasses, but can be planted by itself for a truly rugged stand.                      

LADAK - summer dormant variety used in foothill areas with sufficient Spring rainfall for early hay cuttings         

RANGER - a drought tolerant variety for rough ground, poor soils and moisture                                                  

Flood Tolerant variety:

Norwegian brand - a very winter hardy variety which can withstand periodic wet soil conditions plus drought.  New production not available until Fall 2007.

Misc. varieties:

RAMBLER - a hardy creeping pasture type variety most often used with pasture grasses.  Similar to travois and spreador alfalfas

Common winterhardy - when best purity and germ at minimum price are the only consideration                            

MULTILEAF alfalfa - good expression ratio on a variety with excellent disease package.

1S-1055 (NEW) - high resistance to 4 different nematodes.  Fall dormancy 5 variety.

1S-1010 OGA - organic alfalfa                                            

certified seed specifies that you are guaranteed genetic purity as to variety because the state crop improvement agencies monitor their production.  If you require genetic purity on your seed purchases, look for the "blue tag" certified tag on your seed.                                                                     

Clovers; Vetches, Peas, Turnips:

MARATHON red clover - northern 3 year pasture hay type.

ARLINGTON red clover - resistance to northern antracnose & powdery mildew

medium red clover - Oregon grown component common in Midwest mixes                                                                            

Ladino clover - non drought tolerant perennial for meadowlands.  plant with grasses as it lacks winter hardiness and persistence                                        

ALSIKE clover - hardy clover that will grow where others fail.  often planted with timothy. treated as a biennial

WHITE DUTCH clover - similar in appearance to ladino, but plant parts are smaller.  More persistent, drought and alkali tolerant than ladino.

Yellow blossom sweet clover - soil building legume with low bloat likelihood, woody stemmed when mature, pasturing promotes finer stem                              

RAPESEED; dwarf essex - biennial for pasture after grain harvest for sheep and hogs.  Rapid grower for most soils.

Dryland Grasses:

CRITANA thickspike wheatgrass - low growing, spreads by rhizomes for dry hillsides and ridges                       

SODAR streambank wheatgrass - short growing drought tolerant turf grass, deep rooted                                    

KIRK wheatgrass - a hybrid of fairway and nordan varieties.  heavy forage producer                                 

NORDAN wheatgrass - long lived drought tolerant bunchgrass well suited for arid regions.

SIBERIAN wheatgrass - fine stems with maximum drought tolerance                                                               

EPHRIAM wheatgrass - creeping variety for erosion control                                                                            

RUSH intermediate wheatgrass - good pasture or hay grass which performs well on sandy soils.  14 inch minimum rainfall.  Not tolerant of wet, salty or alkali soils.                           

TALL wheatgrass - a palatable coarse bunchgrass which is used in soil reclamation                                           

HARD fescue (Durar) - for well drained, variable soils.  used for erosion control and rec. areas.  low growing     

SHEEP fescue - similar to hard fescue, but more drought tolerant                                                                    

Pasture Grasses:

ANNUAL ryegrass - quick germ, fast growth to retard weed growth in initially planted mixes                             

PERENNIAL ryegrass - tetraploids for aggressive growth in pastures also used in thinning alfalfa stands             

LATAR orchardgrass - late, hardy maturing variety most often used in combination with alfalfas                        

POTOMAC orchardgrass - persistent, productive, rust resistant, early maturing variety                                      

PROFILE orchardgrass - newer, improved variety with much drought tolerance                                                

PAIUTE orchardgrass - a drought tolerant variety which will persist down to 11" rainfall                                    

FAWN tall fescue - a long lived aggressive bunchgrass for a variety of soil types and moisture conditions                                       

JOHNSTONE - tall fescue/perennial ryegrass cross.  Durability of a tall fescue, but better palatabilty.

Smooth bromegrass - deep rooted, rhizome spreading, semi drought tolerant sod forming grass used on variety of soils

BROMAR bromegrass - a meadow bromegrass that has more aggressive growth than smooth bromegrass, but not as long lived.

CLIMAX timothy - a shallow rooted, productive and palatable for hay or pasture grass.

 Alfalfa/red clover include preinnoculation with Nitragin Gold.  Additional fungicide treatments are available.  Various freight rates are available depending on destination and quantities.  Please inquire for additional seed items not listed above.
